Tilting Axis 2025: Amanda T. McIntyre’s exploration of Caribbean identity through architecture, film, and masquerade.

This is My House is a vibrant exploration of contemporary Caribbean identity through architecture, performance, and masquerade, presented by the 2025 Nieuwe Instituut/Tilting Axis Fellow, Amanda T. McIntyre. This recorded event features McIntyre’s lecture unpacking her experimental work with Caribbean architectural forms and sartorial practices, grounded in her reinterpretation of the Baby Doll masquerade. The conversation following the lecture, with artist and researcher Quincy Gario (Sandberg Instituut), deepens the inquiry into postcolonial embodiment and creative resistance. Moderated by Federica Notari, with opening remarks by Tilting Axis co-founder Annalee Davis, the session offers critical insight into regional aesthetics and diasporic memory.

This recording is accompanied by a screening of McIntyre’s poetic art film Two Years in the French West Indies, with cinematography by Stephen Lee Sing, and footage from Dolly Mas 2025, captured by Wayne Lee Sing and Anya Aching.

Photography credits include Marissa Yung Lee, Wayne Lee Sing, Nicola Cross, Matthew Creese, The Fake Artist, and Marlon James. All Dolly Mas costume designs are by McIntyre.

Special thanks to Freetown Collective for the generous use of their tracks “Feel the Love” and “Take Me Home.”
