In the fifth talk we meet up online with architect/researcher Sean Leonard, part of Co-RD Limited, and co-founder of Alice Yard, a contemporary art space located in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, which hosts and facilitates an ongoing programme of artists and artists’ projects, where networking, collaboration, improvisation and play are key. In 2020 Leonard was selected as the inaugural recipient of the Tilting Axis Fellowship made possible among others by Het Nieuwe Instituut. This position includes collaborations with the Amsterdam Museum, De Appel, The Black Archives and FKA Witte de With / Melly. This is also how ‘In Search of the Pluriverse’ and Leonard crossed paths. A vivid talk about heritage, the yard as a space of play and negotiation, swamp lodges and stilt walkers. We are pleased to inform you that Sean Leonard has been interviewed by curators Sophie Krier and Erik Wong as part of the travelling academy of Het Nieuwe Instituut, called In Search of the Pluriverse.  Sean has been invited to one of the Warming Up Talks because his research for this fellowship is closely aligned with the main themes of the travelling academy.

The Het Nieuew Instituut just published their talks (Warming up to the Pluriverse #5 + bonustrack) on soundcloud, their webmagazine and Instagram.

The Travelling Academy

In various places in and around Europe, and with local and Dutch-based designers, the Travelling Academy explores how formal and informal forms of knowledge development can reinforce each other when dealing with social and spatial issues. Het Nieuwe Instituut developed this initiative for internationalisation because of the growing need for the exchange of knowledge and experience, between both designers and embassies. The latter, with their networks, are therefore important partners. The institute has invited researchers and designers Sophie Krier and Erik Wong to design the first five stages of the Travelling Academy. They have introduced a comprehensive perspective, In Search of the Pluriverse, which they will develop in the near future through the form of “warming-up talks”.
